Tree Planting Day

Update -
We are very sorry to say that the tree planting day has been cancelled.  Our Grounds Manager has been out with the contractor and the ground is far too wet after last night's rain to be able to plant trees, they would likely just rot.
We have decided to cancel the event. As this is really short notice could you please all share this news.

St Andrews Parish Council is thrilled to announce the scheduled Tree Planting Day, set to take place on Saturday, March 2nd, 2024, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Residents are invited to join in this community effort to enhance the local environment and combat climate change.

This year, we are actively participating in Trees for Climate, a nationwide initiative aimed at woodland creation. This program boasts a substantial investment and features one of the most competitive and adaptable grant systems for tree planting currently available. Teaming up with our partners, Swindon Borough Council, Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, and Southern Forestry, we are committed to planting 1453 trees across three designated sites. Our selection includes a variety of native UK species, complemented by Heritage fruit trees, enriching the diversity of our planting efforts.

Tree planting serves as a catalyst for numerous benefits within our parish:
-It attracts pollinators and provides essential shelter and shade for local wildlife.
-The process contributes to improving soil quality.
-It aids in managing water flow and mitigating soil erosion.
-The initiative provides engaging opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts and educational institutions.
-Furthermore, it yields fruit, benefiting both humans and wildlife alike.

The designated meeting point for the event is Diamond Jubilee Park. Three distinct sites have been identified by the parish council to create woodland spaces:

Site 1: Diamond Jubilee Park/Lyall Close
Site 2: Northbourne Road
Site 3: Oakhurst Way/Redhouse Park

The council extends an invitation to local businesses, community groups, and individuals willing to volunteer for this noble cause. Volunteers are crucial to the success of the initiative, and their support in planting trees across the parish is highly valued.

For those eager to contribute to the initiative, volunteering opportunities are available at various sites throughout the Parish. To register your interest in volunteering or for further information, please contact us via email at enquiries@standrews-pc.gov.uk.

Let's come together as a community to make a positive impact on our environment and create a greener, healthier future for generations to come.
